Windows Defender Exclusions
Why Are Exclusions Needed?
Windows Defender and other antivirus software may incorrectly flag compiled BambooBasic executables as potential threats.
This is a common issue with compiled programs and is known as a "false positive".
When you compile a BambooBasic program, it creates a native Windows executable (.exe file). Antivirus software uses
heuristic analysis to detect potentially malicious behavior, and compiled programs - especially those that create windows,
access files, or use networking - can sometimes trigger these heuristics.
This does not mean your programs are unsafe! It simply means that Windows Defender doesn't recognize your
custom-compiled executables and treats them with caution.
The Solution: Folder Exclusions
To prevent Windows Defender from scanning and potentially blocking your BambooBasic programs, you can add
folder exclusions. This tells Windows Defender to skip scanning files in specific folders.
We recommend adding an exclusion for your entire BambooBasic folder. This ensures that:
- Your compiled programs run without interruption
- The compilation process isn't slowed down by real-time scanning
- You don't receive false positive warnings when testing your programs, examples or boom examples
Using the Defender Exclusion Manager
BambooBasic includes a convenient tool to manage Windows Defender exclusions:
- Open the tool: In the BambooBasic editor, go to Tools > Defender Exclusions...
- The tool will launch automatically with Administrator privileges (you may see a UAC prompt)
- The tool will display current Windows Defender exclusions and suggest adding your BambooBasic folder
- Review the suggested folder and click "Apply Changes" to add the exclusion
Administrator Privileges Required
The Defender Exclusion Manager requires Administrator privileges because:
- Reading Windows Defender exclusion lists requires elevated permissions
- Modifying Windows Defender settings is a system-level operation
- This protects your system by ensuring only authorized users can change security settings
If you run the tool without Administrator privileges, it will display a message asking you to run it as Administrator.
Manual Method (PowerShell)
If you prefer to add exclusions manually, you can use PowerShell:
- Right-click the Start button and select "Windows PowerShell (Admin)" or "Terminal (Admin)"
- Run the following command (replace the path with your BambooBasic installation folder):
Add-MpPreference -ExclusionPath "C:\Users\YourUsername\BambooBasic"
The Defender Exclusion Manager can also copy PowerShell commands to your clipboard for convenience.
Important Security Notes
Only exclude folders you trust! Folder exclusions tell Windows Defender to skip scanning those locations.
Follow these guidelines:
- Only add exclusions for your BambooBasic installation and your project folders
- Don't add exclusions for system folders or untrusted locations
- Be cautious when downloading and running programs from untrusted sources
- Your own BambooBasic programs are safe, but always scan downloaded files from the internet
Troubleshooting
Problem: Windows Defender still blocks my compiled programs
- Verify the exclusion was added: Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings > Exclusions
- Make sure the exclusion path exactly matches your BambooBasic folder
- Try restarting your computer after adding the exclusion
Problem: The Defender Exclusion Manager won't run
- The tool automatically requests Administrator privileges - click "Yes" on the UAC prompt
- Check that your Windows Defender is enabled (the tool requires Defender to be active)
- If the tool fails to launch, try running it manually from tools\DefenderExclusionManager\DefenderExclusionManager.exe
